Using Home Year

What this product is

Home Year is a private family tracker for homeschool work, school days, and a record packet you can download. You bring your own books. It is not a school, not a curriculum, not legal advice, not educational counseling, and not a state form. State checklists, hour/day meters, and “what our state asks” notes in the app are planning aids only. Some numbers are baselines, not guarantees. You alone are responsible for what your state, district, or umbrella actually requires, and for anything you file or submit elsewhere.

Who May Sign Up

The family account is for a parent or legal guardian age 18 or older. You must be able to consent for the children you add. Kids Zone is for children in that household after you add them with a first name, last name, and PIN.

Your Household

You keep PINs inside the family. You are responsible for the children you add, for what is entered on Parents and Kids Zone, and for who you invite as a second parent or caregiver. Lounge notes must stay civil and must not include emails or other private contact details. You are responsible for posts you make in the Lounge.

The Household Plan

Home Year is a paid product. One household is $9.99 a month unless we tell you a different price at checkout. You pay for the household, not per child. Access to Parents and Kids Zone stays open while the plan is active. If the plan ends, the household is locked until it is paid again. The site owner may include a household at no charge.

Payment is processed by Stripe. Card details are handled by Stripe under Stripe’s terms. We store payment status and Stripe customer/subscription ids, not full card numbers. Failed or disputed payments may lock the household until the issue is resolved with Stripe.

You can stop the monthly plan anytime from Parents → Settings → Billing (Manage billing opens Stripe’s customer portal). Stopping the plan ends future charges for that subscription. Canceling the whole household account under Settings deletes the family’s records here and also stops the plan when Stripe is connected. Fees already charged for the current month are not refunded unless we say otherwise in writing. Questions about a charge: michael.kowalke@home-year.com.

Phone Alerts And Optional Features

If you turn on Phone Alerts, we may send push notices (for example when a child marks work ready, or an evening reminder that work is still waiting). You can turn alerts off in Settings. Alerts depend on your device, browser, and network; delivery is not guaranteed.

Acceptable Use

Do not try to break into another household, scrape the service, harass other families, upload malware, abuse invitations, or use Home Year for anything illegal. Do not reverse-engineer or overload the service. We may suspend or close an account that harms the product, other families, or our providers.

Records And Downloads

Attendance registers, grade reports, CSVs, and record PDFs are copies of what you stored here. They are not official affidavits, IHIPs, transcripts, diplomas, or superintendent forms. Keep your own backups of anything you must file. We are not responsible for a school, district, or state rejecting or misunderstanding your records.

Third-Party Services

The app runs on providers we choose (including hosting, database, and payment). Their outages, changes, or errors can affect Home Year. Links you add to curriculum sites open on those publishers’ pages; we do not control or endorse their content.

No Warranty

The service is provided as-is and as-available. Homeschool rules change. We work to keep state notes current, but we do not promise they are complete, accurate for your situation, or that the app will always be available, error-free, or secure against every attack.

Limitation Of Liability

To the fullest extent allowed by law, Home Year and its owner are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, missed filings, school enrollment decisions, or compliance outcomes — even if we were told those risks were possible.

Our total liability for any claim related to Home Year is limited to the greater of (a) the fees you paid us for the household plan in the three months before the claim, or (b) twenty-five U.S. dollars ($25). Some places do not allow certain limits; in those places our liability is limited to the maximum the law allows.

Your Responsibility

You agree to defend and hold harmless Home Year and its owner from claims, damages, and costs (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) that arise from your use of the service, your children’s use, content you enter or post, reliance on state checklists or exports, or your breach of these terms — except to the extent caused by our willful misconduct.

Ohio Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Ohio, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. You and we agree that courts in Ohio have exclusive venue for disputes that cannot be resolved informally, except that we may seek injunctive relief anywhere to protect the service or other families.

Changes

We may update these terms. The date at the top will change when we do. If you keep using Home Year after that, the new terms apply. If you do not agree, stop using the service and cancel the household plan.
